Crime, Press, and Killers

As I recently looked up information on the topic of crime during the gilded age, many stories and newspapers popped up. It was explained that newspapers were the gossipers of the town; they explained everything and involved many pictures of what had happened. Since the press was very popular they specifically talked about the drama in the city which was also a very helpful way of urban growth, because through the crimes, press, and serial killers people talked to one another about it all.
Mobs in the city, fighting for what they believe
The newspapers were the gossip of the town; they were like magazines now-a-days, with all of the weekly information on what we really want to hear about. Except during the gilded age they put information that mostly involved rich people and pretty girls, every story in the newspaper exposed scandals and investigated wrong doing of public officials. When newspapers took political stances they also targeted and figured out scandals involving the presidents. They made stories that people would remember and soon after talk about, there cartoons that were created etched into people’s mind. A specific example that the whole town was talking about, that movies and books wore written about was the Red Velvet Swing.

Popular Newspaper headings, that attracted people to read
The Red Velvet Swing was about this girl named Evelyn Resbit who’s raped at a young age by this guy named Stanford White, he was supposed to be helping her act in movies but took advantage of her when she was passed out drunk at his house. During the time she got older she met a new man and told him about what had happened, and soon they were married but he went crazy and shot Stanford White because “he ruined my wife! He had it coming to him. He took advantage of the girl and then abandoned her! You’ll never go out with that women again.” a quote as Thaw was standing over his dead body. The press was all about this and before you knew it the whole town was talking about it, it was one of the major crimes that are still popular today.
Evelyn Resbit a beautiful young lady that was part of a crime
Before the gilded age, the Victorian era was about; they dealt with crime in ways that no man would want to live through. Most offenders were young men which involved the problems of stealing, killings and violence while very few women did get caught for prostitution, soliciting, drunkenness, and disorderly vagrancy. If someone was caught they would usually hang them or garrote in front of a huge crowd. People didn’t like this as much so as years went by during the 1880’s metropolitan decided to make a police force, the police were forced to help stop and prevent crime. Every town now has a police force to enforce rules and stop crime! It was unfortunate how richer people or people with more power could get away with crimes more easily then the less wealthy could.
Crime in the City
A Huge serial killer that the police force did not know about was H.H. Holmes. Holmes was a man convicted for murders from 27 to 100 or even more is what he has told press. He bought a hotel in the heart of Chicago’s world fair right after the opening in 1993, except this hotel was created like a dungeon, with trap doors, gas jets, and a basement to burn dead bodies. He was a rich man so not many people suspected him, but it wasn’t till he was convicted for the murder of Benjamin Pitzel after they had a disagreement on life insurance. Holmes was then known as the 1st documented serial killer of that time. Everyone knew about it press, people, actors of the time, and not many people felt safe anymore; it was the discussion of this horrid action that people really in a weird way felt connected.
H.H. Holmes the 1st serial killer known to man

Crime, press, and serial killers all were very popular during the gilded age. The press and crimes were a huge part of growth, especially when it came to crimes, because the information was always twisted into something that people would want to read or hear about. Many of the information in the most famous stories, involved a wealthy man or a pretty girl.  It was a way of telling the world, that it can happen to them to.

i chose this source because it helped me with my research on the press. it explained to me the differences between the different types of Newspapers or journals.

i used this source to help me with my information on Holmes, to describe to me who he really was and his background life story.

this source helped me with the explanation of how the writers for the newspapers wrote and exactly what was popular to write about.

i used this source because it was a good place to look up different facts about crime and the background information.

this source was valuable for who convicted crimes and what sometimes happened, the different types of ways the police force dealt with crimes.

this source was background information that described how they used to punish people for crimes and the difference to now.

this was a good source to find because it helped me look up information on research for one of the famous trials/crimes during this era.

Our growth

i recently researched human migration, human population, and the idea of visualization. The more i looked up the more interesting it became. i learned that people sorted others in their color, like they could be white but look tan and people would sort them into the groups of american Indian, no one cared what they really were, just how they looked. Now today we know our races, we know where our ancestors are from, and now we are able to be friends with people of different race and not get put into a color chart. It was also cool to see how much the growth of all countries expanded and the routes that many have taken to get there. There is information of people from 60,000 years ago, they way they traveled, ate, and looked. On a certain website there was the genetic footprint, and when you clicked on the different routes, the types of people that traveled on that route would pop up, you were able to tell where they went to. Another website studied Europeans descendants from 3 groups that moved into Europe at different part of history, the first to arrive were hunter-gatherer who arrived 45,000 years ago, then there were farmers that arrived 8,000 years ago, and last of all there were nomadic Sheepherders that arrived 4,500, just to see the growth and different lifestyles throughout history was very interesting.

Philanthropy

Philanthropy is defined as the promotion to welfare of others expressed especially by generous donation of money to good cause. I have learned that philanthropy is how we get some of the major foundations in the world today, Michael Jackson donated more than $500 million to foundations and charity organizations he was one of the only singers that gave charity concerts. Andrew Carnegie gave away 90% of his fortune to charities all around the world, which was $2 billion, most of them were due to education, he was very big on helping others with college education, libraries, and many more.Bill gates gave away $29 billion to the bill and Melinda foundation which helps health and education all around the world. If i were to become a philanthropist i would give my money to special needs children as in help with health care, because sometimes those children's health care is more then the parents can afford. I would also help with the education for the homeless, and children that don't have enough money for school. I would help open up some free schools around where everything is free and the donation of food and bathrooms would help a lot.

Thinking about Success

1. Hard work, Skill, Opportunity, Luck
2. I believe hard work is #1 because if you want to succeed at something you have to work hard at it, you cant just become a doctor without studying the human body. Skill comes second because if you are naturally good at something you still need to improve on it, to get better and that takes dedication. opportunity is 3rd because not everyone can do something well no one just knocks on your door and gives you a job without any experience. Luck comes last because you cant depend on being lucky, you are lucky in the game of Jeopardy but you cant cant rely on succeeding for luck.

The Ball

1.the whole entire page was about the ball, they believe that the readers were very interested by the costumes and decorations. the newspapers perspective on the issue is believed to be fascinating and exciting.

2. the perspective on the event in this article looks like it’s a menu about step by step what they are doing. it seems like they aren’t being critical about the ball yet they want everyone to know what is happening, its an abundance of information. we can learn about the whole day, about all of the activities/dances, and everyone that was there.

3. the newspaper published his views to show that not everyone was all for the ball, he saw the ball as a problem because he believed that it was ill advised. the ball was criticized by a clergyman because he was showing his views compared to what other peoples views were.

4. the society was fascinated by the costumes that the people had worn and the amount of people that had attended, it was like a fashion show.

Industrialization

Throughout reading some sources of different type of industrialization i have learned that every store has some competition. I learned that Zara is one of the biggest clothing industries in the world.  "The company produces about 450 million items a year for its 1,770 stores in 86 countries" everything that is designed or made from Morocco, Portugal, or china has to go through Spain before being shipped out to stores. Zara is the clothing company that has supply and demand all year long. H&M is the second largest apparel retailer in the world. There clothes are created in Sweden with over 150 designers, they also like to use a certain technique for their clothes which makes them much more wealthier. they rotate through different clothing, always having the new fashion trends. H&M also gives a lot of clearance, and the cheaper the clothes the more likely people would buy, because no one likes to buy expensive clothing. It interest me how in the top 10 supply chain the technologies and different systems are so opular today, like the ford assembly line and the toyota production system, two great car manufacturers that were made in 2 completely different years. the ford assembly line was created in 1913 and the toyota production was created in 1990 yet they both changed our world today, without these two things i am not sure if cars would've been invented. Industrialization is a very popular benefit to the world that we live in, if we didnt have different industries creating different resources we might not have had the technologies/clothing that we have today.

Native Americans

1,https://archive.org/stream/conciseschoolhis02camp#page/n23/mode/2up

2.Today,In class, we are looking up the history of Native Americans on an online textbook. We are reading abut what they looked like and their living style. A Savage is defined as a member of people regarded as primitive and uncivilized, a savagery is deinfed as the condition of being primitive or uncivilized.

3. As an american srudent reading about native americans i would be very frightened by how they lived. it is scary that their favorite thing was war and that they would be known as the bravest warrior if they showed how many scalps they tore from their foes. Just by looking at one i would not be as frightened. as they are written about they do not seem at all scary, instead they seem very friendly. it is just some of their hobbies that would make me think differently. it also interested me how they built their houses and hardy had to wear clothes to stay warm.

Indian Newspaper

The blog that i found during class was an article called The Indian written in The Weekly Arizona, July 17, 1869. It is events from the January 1868 to the present day of 1869. he article is about everything that the Indians have done wrong. All of their killings and stealing. There are certain points that describe the Indians taking 200 mules and horses from someone else's farm. Looking at the list the Indians would kill at least 2 men and then would take some cattle, mules, or horses, always alternating. It says that sometimes they would just kill for fun if there was ever a mild argument. Just to think of this it was a killing spree over 18 months that the government did not help to stop.
Having all these unfortunate events happen around me is just frightening. i don't feel safe anymore. what am i supposed to do if an Indian comes my way and tries to kill me? i have no weapon to use for protection, Indians have killed many of my friends and have even stole from many. they mostly steal animals and never any other valuables. But i am scared to walk outside of my house, i just want this to stop. that is why i am okay if the military aids the Indians. i would rather be able to make some settlement on what to agree on, but unfortunately that is not possible.

Social Media vs. Newspaper

Our use of social media is selective and intentional so that we tend to remain interested in only things that we've already been interested in, whereas newspapers expose readers to information on a broad range of topics. This can connect communities by providing information about what others may be interested in. It may raise questions i never thought to ask.

Newspaper

the definition of a newspaper is a printed publication consisting of folded unstapled sheets that contains recent news, featured articles, advertisement, and correspondence. Newspapers first came into existence in the 17th century in Germany. Some of the oldest newspapers in the united states are still used today such as the New Hampshire Gazette-1756, Hartford Courant-1764, Augusta Chronicle-1785, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette-1786, and the Berskhire Eagle-1789. A Newspaper of record is a large circulation whose editorial and news-gathering functions are professional and authoritative. The first designated Newspaper of record in the US was the 1913 New York Times. Another paper that could be considered as a newspaper of record could be The Washington Post. Looking at a newspaper is different from the social media in today's society by the differences of a newspaper being a print out and harder to receive. a newspaper includes the recent deaths compared to the social media where deaths are harder to look up.But the social media is much easier to access and you are able to find many more stories. to find then compared to the newspaper. i recently found a newspaper that was published October 15,2015 of Wall Street Journal some of the leading stories on this newspaper are Fed Doubts Grow on 2015 Rate Hike, Medicare set to soar, Feds catch-22: rates and recession Risk, and Democrats Press Biden to make decision.

Indian Fashion Controversies/Celebrities

i first started researching Indian fashion controversies, and it was interesting to see Urban Outfitters and Victoria Secret doing something wrong. Urban outfitters sold many Indian clothing and they labeled all of them as Navajo, and the Indians did not like it. it was offensive towards their race and very stereotypical, but that wasn't the only popular store that was in trouble. during one of the Victoria Secret fashion shows, Karlie Kloss walked out in a bra and underwear wearing a headdress, the Indian heritage was very upset. As it says on National Turk the outfit was "heavily criticized as a display of ignorance toward tribal culture and history. It was an abuse of Indian culture, from a nation that lacks history culture and values." figuring out the Karlie Kloss was busted for wearing an inappropriate outfit in the Indian tribe, it lead me to think about what other celebrities have gotten in trouble for what they had wore and the i found a lot.
As it says on Fashion & Style, celebrities wearing Indian outfits is very offensive. many celebrities have the option to do interesting music videos, and in those videos many dress up to show a story, but what they have figured out is that sometimes the way they dress is very offensive. On Native Appropriations it is explained that wearing a headdress is a symbol of honor and respect and only men are supposed to wear them. Many celebs such as Pharrell, ke$ha, Lana Del Ray,  Karlie Kloss, Vanessa Hudgens, and more have worn these headdresses in concerts, magazines, the runway, and music videos.

1st Quarter Reflections

Throughout this quarter my class has had multiple discussions on slavery, Old West, Civil war and any more. But i have learned the most information this quarter on slavery and the old west. these topics have been very interesting to learn about because it was our past and that has a significant impact on our world now.  Learning about these topics blew my mind who would've known that what we believe a cowboy is now was never what it was back then. Cowboys were known as a symbol of nature and violence, the superior. Now we think of cowboys as dudes riding horses and getting into fights all day, completely opposites. I also was surprised that most southern states owned slaves, and that the population of those states are much less then any other state in the country. Owning a slave back then was awful and the way they abused them was just cruel, When we watched 12 years a slave it made my heart race and not in the good way, i could not believe what these owners had done to their "property." The whipping, the screaming, and the sadness was just hard to watch. towards the beginning of the year we discussed the topic of empathy and sympathy , it wasn't too long after that that we had to relate empathy to every discussion we had and to every topic that was announced, it was very interesting to see that you could relate yourself to an awful situation such as war, you empathize for those soldiers even though you don't like all the killing they're doing but yet you know that what they are doing is right and its for a good cause.
This quarter i have learned an incredible amount of information, and that usually is not normal for me. last year in history we would go over a topic and i would forget what we discussed not even 30 minutes later, but this year i have learned a bunch and i mean a bunch of information. this quarter i think i have grown as a thinker because i always have something to say after every topic and i hope that i grow to become a great learner of history! really just someone that can know what they're talking about instead of just blabbering about random facts. We have not done many huge assignment but we did recently have an essay and i didn't do too shabby. i got an 88% and i believe that was one of my areas of strength! i hope that throughout the rest of the year we can learn about different religions in the United states because as a Jew i know a lot about my religion but not as much as other peoples, except Christianity, i know a lot about that religion, but i think it would be interesting if we learned about Hindu, Indian, and more!

Film Essay

As a person that understands topics better by visual presentations, it is more productive for me to watch a movie than read a book. having watched a two great movies with slavery, i have gotten a better understanding of how violent and scary the past was. In Glory and 12 Years a Slave, there were multiple scenes of violent crimes now a days that were considered okay back then. Hearing and reading about it would not get the right type of violence that was actually portrayed. I believe that watching something instead of reading would help with a better understanding.
Many movies are true stories and the true stories are the ones that mean the most to someone, it is a movie with purpose. 12 Years a Slave and Glory were both true stories about slavery, yet neither of them were that alike. The filming of Glory (1989) was about the black regiments in civil war, many of which were considered free. But not all movies about history have to portray the bad parts. This movie showed not only the horror but the beauty, a commander caring for his troops, the troops working together, and happiness. This movie was awarded outstanding motion picture, that was a huge accomplishment, in meaning this movie was awarded one of the best movies to be shown, with the greatest pictures and settings. Elizabeth from IMDB reviewed the movie and described it to be, “Easily best civil war movie produced. filled with memorable and moving scenes. history is brought to life more vividly in this film than in any budget all-star cast. Brings issue of the time slavery freedom and sacrifice- down to human scale.” The director Ed Zwick did not want to out do the book that had been republished into a movie yet he wanted to re-examine history, to show people that what had happened was awful but it had to be showed. In the movie 12 Years a Slave it was about a free black man that had been taken and sold into a slavery. It was a usual occurrence, to take free black men and make the property. We the  people in the future did not know of our own how badly this was. Mens names were changed, owners were cruel, and relationships between the owner and workers did indeed happen, but in a completely different view that we want to look at it. This is not what people wanted to hear but  unfortunately they had to because that was history and the history of the world is full of a lot of frightening things. Steve Mcqueen, the director of 12 Years a slave went on to say in an interview that he understood that many people were not okay with the gruesome scenes that were shown but that “people want to close their eyes on some subject. they want to keep on going, they don't want to look behind them, but sometimes they have to.” 12 Years a slave was awarded Best motion picture, Best adapted screenplay, Best feature, and many more. The harshest movie can and might win and represent the scariest part of history but the more inspiring.
The directors of both these movies spoke out about the this time of history that it was awful and people need to know about it. that's why people should be allowed to watch movies, it is a video of the past, a video that holds historical content that nobody would want to happen again, these videos that could be shown and should be shown prove that our world nowadays is much better than what it used to be. These videos that are shown can be related to in an empathetic way, feeling bad for someone even if it is just in a movie is a personally great thing to do. It shows that you are human and not some robot!

Practicing Incorporating a Quotation

According to an article of Reel america history, "Zwick used many willing and able civilian re-enactors. These extras took their roles very seriously and were consistently adamant in offering advice for the bettering of the film's details." this quote describes the dedication of many of the soldiers and the type of encouragement they had towards each other involving advice. It is kinda cool that with all of the help and dedication during this movie, many of the actors were not payed.

This is what Mrs.Lawson wanted me to learn today:

  • Only use quote when it adds power and style to my writing
  • Always make it clear, from context, that i understand the full meaning of the quote
  • Whether i quote or paraphrase, always be transparent about the source and how im using it
  • If i usse another author's exact words or phrases, to any extent, i have to use quotation marks and give credit
  • If i use another author's presentation of facts or ideas, but put their ideas in my own words, i better have a good reason for doing that, and i MUST give credit
  • Hyperlinking is so easy, there is no excuse for not being transparent about my sources
I feel like i have the hang of paraphrasing but i would like some extra help with it because it still gets confusing at some parts when it comes to difficult quotes

Paraphrase Practice

In this article i found a quote by actor Morgan Freedman and i will paraphrase below:
"I don't have a problem with that. You cannot reasonably ask a white writer to do it differently. Now, if we're going to start citing some unfortunates, it might be unfortunate that a black writer didn't write it, but if a black writer had written it, there's a good chance he wouldn't have found a producer. So there you are. This is a movie that did get made, and a story did get told, and that's what is important."
This is my paraphrase:
There is not a problem about this but there is nothing to be said when a white writer writes his way because there is no way to correct him. Yet if a black writer wants to write their own way they might have a lot of difficutly figuring out who to tell their story. It is sad that a black writer wasnt able to write this but im just glad that the story was told. A movie was made, and a incredible story got told and that is all that matters.

Empathy vs. Sympathy

In our generation we have 2 very distinct nouns that are shwn throughout someones lifetime, Empathy and Sympathy.Empathy the ability to understand and share the feelings of another "putting yourself in someone else's shoes" . Sympathy the feeling of caring about someone else's grief or misfortune, it is mutually known as support. although these 2 nouns sound the same they do have a slight difference. Between these two nouns is the one difference, which is having a helpful hand. an example would be helping out in a soup kitchen, you have many choices as to what you could "help" out with, you could "help" out in the back with the cooking, you could "help" serve to the families, or you could "help" with socialization towards the people. A person who is empathetic would decide to socialize and try to put theirselves in the other persons shoes, even though it might be difficult. yet a person who would be sympathetic would pass out the food or help cook in the back, because they do feel sorry but they know they cant do anything about it. there is a reason why i quoted the word help in one of my sentences, i did this because that word is thrown around, you can use the term constantly but not many people live up to the standards of what the word actually means. Throughout the world and troughout the many generations, we have had wars and battles and more wars. Everyone that had fought in these wars were known as brave and never weak. I could not agree onto how these soldiers went into war and what they had fought about, but i could sincerely empathize. i could figure out why they are fighting and what they believe in if i were to empathize and act as if i were there just about to go into war. i have no clue as to what i would be thinking but i would know that what i am doing is right. Empathizing is what makes you different towards the literature, you can personally feel for what was happening during that time period. the past was a difficult time so if you empathize you might have a clearer image as to why many of the major wars and battles happened, not just what is in textbooks and books. Empathizing and Sympathizing is one of the main things that make us human.
